Last week we talked about rest. When I give myself permission to rest, I realize how much incredible connection happens with my family.  The “boredom” and the togetherness with no agenda and no distractions has so much to offer. 

With children, there is a closeness, a connection that starts to happen when we are simply together. We laugh, we cuddle, we share and talk to one another about things that just come up in our minds. We grow so much closer. 

When we are constantly moving, it’s hard to remember how important this down time is in nurturing connection with one another. One way to start building this into your day is by simply making real eye contact with your children a few times a day. I know what you’re thinking, I already do that! If we really lean into these micro moments of connection through our eyes, there are unbelievable benefits

This week, practice making eye contact with each of your children and/or students at least once a day. 

Note: this moment of eye contact comes without an agenda, just a simple check-in, and sweet connection.

This week’s practice: 

  1. Make conscious eye contact with people in your family, close friends, and even pets. 
  2. See how it feels to just look at someone’s eyes, even for a short moment, simply as a way to connect. 

In the classroom: 

  1. Try a daily check-in with your students, making eye contact with each of them at least once throughout the day. 
  2. Eye contact in this way can help them feel seen, for some they may have never experienced this before. What a gift!

At home: 

  1. Try a morning hug and moment of eye contact. 
  2. Really notice how it feels to take time and really look at your child and/or children.
